Playstation 3: Linux Install

Apparently Yellow Dog came up with the Linux version for PlayStation 3. If you have an 80G hardware, running Linux would turn it into a very powerful machine.

Linux is an open source OS, therefore it comes absolutely free! Why would it be appealing to customers? Well, thats easy. Sony being a competitor to Microsoft does not have Windows Media Center support, therefore you cannot stream many movie formats. If you are a Netflix lover, such as myself, you would know that Netflix offers many movies online. However PS3, wont play it :(. It also wont play my favorite XM Radio Online.

So, a Linux OS install offers an opportunity to download and install all the necessary tools for film and audio streaming.

I head about this at IBM of all places! Seems people are hooking up the Linux playstations in an attempt at grid computing!

BTW, you know Netflix has their new box coming out. Good for people like me that have just a TV and a DVD player. Hopefully, I'll be able to lose the DVD player too if Netflix is able to get new movies and in High Def.

I cant wait for HD content on Netflix too. That would be great, if i can add those to my library. If only there was time ... Perhaps the Capstone should be on selling media services over the net to different media. Ie: HD Players, Playstation, Ipods, etc... getting music, movies, tv, and radio all at once. and scheduling those via a website of some kind. pay one flat fee, and you are good to go and control the content that the whole family watches. may be even add new releases. :)
